SPAY & NEUTER

Spaying or neutering your pet has been shown to help them live longer and healthier lives as well as minimizing behaviorial issues, and reduces euthanasia at animal shelters due to pet overpopulation. All of our surgery patients have IV catheters placed and IV fluids are recommended for all anesthetic procedures. Several monitoring devices are used during your pet’s procedure. Our licensed veterinary technicians or doctors will administer anesthesia while a trained assistant continues to monitor and record your pet’s vital signs during the procedure. Medications appropriate for the specific species, size, and surgical procedure are administered for pain management to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible during and after the procedure and all this allows for a faster recovery.

Spaying

Spaying is the complete removal of the ovaries and uterus. The optimum age for a spay is before puberty and is a routine abdominal surgery performed under general anesthesia. It is also called an “ovariohysterectomy.” This procedure consists of a small incision in the abdomen allowing for the removal of the ovaries and uterus. Most animals recover promptly and go home the same evening with a full recovery in 5-7 days. Spaying eliminates the heat cycles that attract male dogs to your yard and home. Most importantly, early spaying prevents two common diseases in intact females: mammary cancer and a deadly uterine infection known as a pyometra.

Neutering

Neutering is the absolute surgical removal of both testicles. It helps in eliminating undesirable and embarrassing behavior in your male dog and reduces roaming, fighting, and spraying in approximately 80-90% of male cats. Neutering your pet prevents testicular cancer and reduces the incidence of prostate disease and certain tumors and hernias that are found in the perianal region.

DENTAL HYGIENE

Dental hygiene is an integral part of your pet’s overall health. When left untreated dental disease can having damaging effects on your pet when the oral bacteria enters the bloodstream and damages the heart valves, liver, and kidneys. These problems can often be avoided or prolonged by maintaining regular dental exam and cleaning for your furry friend.

Animal dentistry is generally more involved and time-consuming than human dentistry. Cleaning your animals teeth requires general anesthesia followed by recovery in our hospital. When under anesthesia, our veterinary technicians perform a comprehensive dental exam to evaluate the oral cavity and health of each tooth. An ultrasonic scaling and polishing is then performed. The veterinarian then goes over any abnormalities found during the oral exam and may request dental x-rays to determine any further treatment. Many teeth that tend to look normal on the outside can have significant amounts of disease under the gum line.

MICROCHIPPING

HomeAgain pet microchip and pet idAguajito Veterinary Hospital is proud to offer HomeAgain microchipping services. Every year thousands of pets go missing and many never make it back to their homes. Having a microchip implanted in your pet is the most simple way to avoid this tragedy. The procedure itself is easy, quick, and as painless as a routine vaccination. The microchip is a very small device similar in size and shape to that of a grain of rice. It is implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades and stays there for the life of the animal.

Every microchip has a unique number. This specific number combined with information about the owner is added to a national pet registry. Every veterinary hospital and animal shelter has electronic scanners for detecting and reading the implanted microchip number. If a lost pet is found and a microchip is detected, the registry is called and the owner can be found in the database and contacted.
