Lack of employment opportunities has forced us to consider surrendering our beloved Nova to the SPCA, an option that we had never thought we would have to consider.

Nova is a 1-year-old cat owned by two CSUMB full time students who live in Marina.
One of the students was working doing in home care, but upon the onset of the Pandemic, was forced to stop working due to safety concerns from her client. One evening during Shelter In Place, Nova was sick, and her owners discovered a piece of rubber shoe insole. She continued to feel sick, and also was not eating or drinking. Her owners took her to the vet and got her x-rays, which showed it was not lodged, nor were there any objects in her stomach. She was given treatments that didn’t seem to help, so they gathered whatever monies they could from friends and family and took her again to the hospital where she had a high fever. By the third veterinarian visit in just a few days, these pet parents were terrified. Nova is only 1.5 years old, and as students, their budget is incredibly limited.
Nova’s owners are close to graduating and knew they were unlikely to be able to afford the numerous diagnostic appointments and eventual medical treatment required to care for Nova, and explained that this uncertainty, coupled with the looming student loan payments, potential housing relocation, and lack of employment opportunities had forced them to consider surrendering Nova to the SPCA, an option that they had never thought we would have to consider if they would not be able to provide adequate care due to financial limitations.
VCA All Pets determined additional testing and likely surgery would be needed to save Nova. It didn’t take Max’s but an hour to receive the thorough application, explanation and approve funding to make up the difference for Nova’s care!
During our follow-ups with clients, Nova’s owners shared her positive progress with us: “Nova is doing great. Her recovery was swift and smooth. Here she is enjoying sunpatches and rainbows with her sister. Jinx is a one-legged rescue who gave us a trial run in rehabilitating cats post-surgery. She was patient and gentle with Nova while she recovered, choosing to sit quietly with her instead of wrestle.
