They told me Quan could only wait two or three days, because he was really bad.
— Quan's Mom —
What is Quan like? What makes him so special?
Quan, a 3 year old Catahoula is a “gentle giant” whose favorite pastime is keeping watch over his family of 4 children and two small dogs. He is an expert cuddler and companion.
His family rescued him from the streets of Salinas, when he was a tiny puppy in poor condition and showing signs of abuse. Although they already had a dog, they knew he needed help. They were rewarded for their choice with his loyalty, protection and love.
What happened to Quan?
One day Quan’s family noticed he was ‘off,’ not eating with his usual hound-style enthusiasm and he seemed uncomfortable. Through their vigilance they saw other signs of abnormal behavior, such as standing statue-like in the yard, instead of sniffing around and marking his favorite bushes.
When continued observation showed that he was not getting better, his mom immediately took him to their family veterinarian, VCA All Pets in Salinas.
Quan was diagnosed with a urinary blockage caused by severe kidney stones. The estimated costs for Quan’s surgery to remove the kidney stones was overwhelming. At the time Quan’s mother, Sherlynn, was dealing with significant financial hardship, and a dramatically reduced income, as she was undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
VCA All Pets referred Quan’s family to Max’s Helping Paws.
What would have happened without help?
Without surgery, Quan would be unable to eliminate urine. The strain alone caused serious pain and if left untreated, would result in a painful death. Sherlynn had to heavily consider euthanasia in order to eliminate Quan’s pain.
Max’s Helping Paws worked with other local agencies to assist Quan and his family with the costs of surgery, as well as follow up treatments.
Now, we are happy to report, Quan is back to his duties of chasing and playing with the smaller family dogs and sleeping lovingly and protectively near his guardian.
