Barney is my son’s best friend.
— Brenda —
A cutie cocker spaniel, still a puppy at a year and 1/2 old, Barney has quickly become an inseparable part of this family’s lives. When they went to pick a new puppy from the litter, they had chosen Barney from among 3 others when Brenda’s son fell in love with Barney right away. With a son who suffers from depression, anxiety and emotional trauma, Barney has become more than a pet, but a true companion of support for this family.
As a single parent, Brenda has kept strong when faced with job loss, cancer within the family and emotional distress. So when Barney began experiencing signs of physical distress such as throwing up and lethargy, this was one more plate to juggle for Brenda. While diligently sending out job applications, yet repeatedly not finding an summer teaching jobs, Brenda was nervous about the possible cost of care for Barney.
As a responsible and loving pet owner, Brenda knew Barney was too important for the family to lose and so took Barney to the Pet Specialists of Monterey right away. Barney was diagnosed with pneumonia and needed immediate care. Already financially strained due to daily expenses, Brenda was heart broken to learn the cost of the treatment for Barney. She felt some relief when the veterinarian mentioned Max’s Helping Paws as a possibility for support during this time and so she applied for a grant for Barney.
After the surgery was completed and Barney recovered, Brenda shared with us some of the things she loved the most about Barney. He is “sweet, energetic, loves to play with people and other dogs. He is always doing fun things that entertain and amuse the family.” This family of 2 was relieved and grateful to have their faithful companion healthy again.
