Cherishing Each Moment With Cali

Her emergency surgery saved her life. We are so grateful to have this extra time with her.

— Boles Family —

A family of 4 humans and 2 companions, the Boles Family felt completed when they adopted this beautiful Pit Bull mix named Cali 5 years ago. She has been a joy to the family ever since they brought her home and has brightened their lives.

During an already challenging year of job loss due to COVID, and veterinary expenses for their other family pet, the last thing the Boles family expected was for Cali to become sick. Still in a youthful-state of play, when Cali began showing blood in her stool, the family was deeply distressed and brought her the Pet Specialists of Monterey for treatment. It was determined there were masses on Cali’s spleen and emergency surgery was needed in order to save Cali’s life. When the cost of surgery was given, the family reached out to Max’s Helping Paws, stating “We have already paid $1,500 for her diagnostic cost and have been approved only for $4000 through CareCredit. The needed surgery and after care is over $6,000. We also paid over $2900 this year for our other, 11 year old dog who has an autoimmune disease. We want the best for Cali and need help.” This family was willing to do whatever they needed to ensure Cali received the treatment she needed.

Thanks to generous donors and partners such as AWAG, Max’s Helping Paws was able to assist in the cost of surgery for Cali, helping to save her life and offer her family peace.

A few weeks following the surgery, the family shared that although the surgery was a success, they will now be facing a loss of Cali in the next few months. They shared their gratitude and story with us, “Cali is currently doing well. Her emergency surgery saved her life as the tumor in her spleen was bleeding into her abdomen and needed to be removed immediately. We are so greatful to have this extra time with her. Sadly, the pathology came back as an aggressive cancer and they give her 1-3 months without chemo, which is much too expensive for us and, they say, would only give us 3-6 month with treatment. We are praying she will be with us past her 7th birthday in January 2021! We are blessed to have her with us still and will give her the best Thanksgiving & Christmas ever if she is still doing well!”

It is with compassion and bittersweetness that the Boles Family now celebrates the last holiday season with their beloved companion Cali. What a gift this season to be able to have Cali with them one last time so they can cherish each and every second with this beloved family member.
