Mini Cow is a five year old Jack Russell terrier mix. Mini Cow or “Mini,” as she is known to her loved ones, got her name due to the fact that she is white with black spots all over, giving her a cow-like appearance. Her mom rescued her at a young age from a home where her skin was raw from having so many flea bites. Since then, she’s been known as the dog that all of her owners’ “grandkids carry around in their strollers and lie down with.” Mini also loves to cuddle in her owners’ arms and sleep under the covers with her in bed.
Being on permanent disability, Mini’s owner spends a majority of her days caring for and spending time with her pets. One day the unthinkable happened. Mini Cow was struck by a car. Her injuries, including a sever pelvic fracture, were life threatening. She needed surgery immediately, or she wouldn’t survive.
With a good but guarded prognosis from the family veterinarian, Mini Cow was referred by her family veterinarian to Pet Specialists of Monterey to perform the necessary surgery. A surgery of this magnitude was well-beyond what Mini Cow’s family could afford. Euthanasia seemed to be the only option to end Mini Cow’s horrific suffering. The Pet Specialists of Monterey sponsored Mini Cow’s grant application to Max’s Helping Paws, and through collaboration with Pet Specialists, Max’s Helping Paws was able to help subsidize the cost of surgery. Mini Cow went home with a long, but hopeful road to recovery ahead. Nerve damage to Mini Cow’s leg meant additional medical care would be needed just a few months later. Unable to feel her foot, Mini Cow was causing severe ulcerations and injury to her body, and became an appendage that served no purpose. Pet Specialists helped Mini Cow once again by providing a much-needed leg amputation. There was little time needed for Mini to adjust, as she hadn’t used that leg for months. After about a week of recuperation time, she is back to chasing cats out of the backyard and “just being Mini.” Mini’s owner said that, “without the help of MHPF, Mini wouldn’t be here today giving everybody love.”
