Toby the Terrier

I love Toby and want him to be safe

— Julia —

Toby the terrier was one lucky pup 5 years ago when he was adopted from Carmel Valley by his forever owner, Julia. Some of Julia’s neighbors needed to make a life change and Julia was quick to adopt this beautiful pup. Together, they have lived in the Carmel area for the last 5 years, with Toby being a playful and energetic addition to Julia’s home.

Early one morning in late August, Julia was abruptly awakened when she heard Toby making yelping sounds. As she rushed to help Toby, she saw that Toby seemed to be experiencing paralysis in one hind leg, with uncontrollable shaking and vomiting happening. Without any hesitation, Julia rushed Toby to the Pet Specialists of Monterey, where it was determined that Toby had experienced a seizure. After a thorough examination and stabilization, the veterinarian was certain Toby would be able to return home after some treatments and care.

As a responsible pet owner, Julia knew how important it was to make sure Toby was treated so that his seizure would not be a recurring problem, yet she knew the cost of treatment would be above her current means. Due to an illness related to mold and the recent pandemic, Julia was experiencing extreme financial hardship as of late. Doing what she could to get by, she became an Instacart personal shopper so that she could continue to provide a home and food for herself and Toby. The unexpected cost of care for Toby’s seizure was overwhelming to Julia and she reached out to Max’s Helping Paws to inquire about a grant for financial assistance. Thanks to Julia’s quick response time and diligence in applying for a grant, Max’s was able to ensure Toby received the needed medications and treatments to alleviate his painful seizure. Thankfully, both Toby and Julia are once again both happy and healthy at home!
