Thanks to you, I was able to make unexpected but necessary decisions based solely on his medical condition.
Little did Kevin know when Vanya (now his Mom) rescued him about 5 years ago that he would soon become her official therapy dog when she became partially-disabled. Vanya and Kevin were a dynamic duo and had a wonderful life together. This little adventure Chihuahua enjoyed climbs up trees and then a relaxed nap with his favorite toys after a ‘rough’ day of play time.
Together for many years, the roles of support shifted as Kevin became ill and needed Vanya’s support. Kevin was having issues due to complications from Diabetes, along with bouts of unexplained collapsing, temporarily losing use of his back legs. Vanya was beyond concerned with worry about her “partner in crime” and was uncertain the best next steps for Kevin. Vanya wanted to take Kevin to the Pet Specialists of Monterey in order to be able to make an informed decision about the next steps for him, but the costs of diagnostic testing were daunting on her fixed income.
Vanya heard about Max’s and applied for financial assistance so that Kevin could receive the diagnostic testing he needed. With this testing, Vanya made the heart-heavy decision that the next steps were to peacefully help Kevin transition from this world of pain he was in and she opted to make the single-most-difficult decision we make for our pets. She was able to make her decision thanks to the knowledge she desperately needed after diagnostics which were done, allowing her to feel confident that the decision was in the best possible interest of Kevin.
While this is always a heart-wrenching choice, Vanya shared her peace with us that came from the opportunity to have the diagnostics done, “Thank you to Max’s Helping Paws for your invaluable financial – and emotional – support for my late chihuahua Kevin. Thanks to you, I was able to make unexpected but necessary decisions based solely on his medical condition. I was very fortunate that Kevin also “told me” he was ready. That, and the extreme compassion of Max’s and Pet Specialists, gave me great comfort at the end of Kevin’s life.”
