Sparty’s Special Care

There is no way I will be able to cover the cost of surgery for my best buddy without assistance.

— Meredith —

A family of two, this companion named Spartacus and his owner Meredith have made a dynamic duo for over 7 years now. As a musician and artist, Sparty has been Meredith’s biggest fan throughout the years. When 2020 happened, many changes took place in their lives, one of which was Spartacus becoming ill. Meredith shares their story below.

“I have had no income for most of 2020 and very limited income in the prior year. There is no way that I will be able to cover the cost of surgery for my best little buddy without assistance. This surgery will give him a reasonable quality of life for hopefully many more years to come. WIthout it, he will lose the use of not just the leg with the injury, but likely the other leg as well due to having to compensate for the loss of the use of the injured leg as a result of existing luxating patella issues. I’ve included my pre-COVID paystub, but am unable to include a current paystub because I am unemployed with no income. I have already incurred nearly $900 in diagnostic fees in just one week. Now it’s been determined that my pup has elevated liver enzymes and that we must determine the cause of this issue before we can even discuss surgery. I cannot afford these diagnostics either, but am applying for help with the surgery given that the cost will be greater than the diagnostics, I think. If there is a way to apply for help with both diagnostics and treatment I’d be so grateful to know how to proceed with that. The estimate of surgical cost came from the ER vet. We are proceeding with our local vet who I will see this afternoon to work on the liver diagnostics.”

Meredith had been doing her very best for herself and Spartacus during an especially difficult year. At Max’s Helping Paws, we understand that life circumstances have shifted this past year and brought many financial hardships to families. For Spartacus, we were able to extend the assistance needed for his first steps in care. He was able to receive the initial treatment needed, yet during the process it was discovered he had Cushing’s, a lifelong condition which Meredith will need to monitor closely. Had Meredith not acted quickly to get Sparty the care he needed, his condition could have worsened to a life-threatening state. Now, we will be able to work together to ensure Spartacus has the care and treatment he needs to be as healthy as possible during his Golden Years with Meredith.
