Have A Heart

Micho is a part of our family now.

— Moreno Family —

When the Moreno Family reached out to Max’s Helping Paws, it was clear from their story below that immediate treatment was needed to ensure the best quality of life for their newest family member, Micho – the black and white domestic kitten.

“Micho is currently under emergency care at Pet Specialists of Monterey. He is on oxygen and receiving medication for breathing issues. To our dismay, an x-ray revealed that he may have been born with an enlarged heart, which is causing him to have shallow breaths of 100 per minute for the last few days. Pet Specialists is awaiting funding confirmation in order to call a cardiologist to conduct further studies and determine the course of action for Micho’s long-term care. We are applying for hardship assistance as I, Miguel, have lost my job a month ago and we are relying solely on unemployment insurance compensation. Maria is a homemaker and does not have income.
Therefore, we are unable to pay full costs of Micho’s care. Moreover, our daughter, Karina (Caretaker), is a full-time college student studying from home under the pandemic and is unable to help with the costs of Micho’s care.”

With unexpected job loss in 2020, this family has been doing their very best to provide shelter and food for themselves, as well as for Micho this year. They also shared, “In addition, we are also struggling to keep up with our mortgage payments from short-term family loans, until gainful employment happens again. Micho’s illness is an extreme unexpected situation, which we could simply not afford to pay for his care. It will cause pain and suffering to Micho and the rest of our family, who have grown very fond and emotionally attached since he was born. Micho is a part of our family now.”

In part thanks to our partners at AWAG and The Doris Day Foundation, Max’s Helping Paws was able to extend the financial assistance that proved to be the lifeline to health for Micho. With this assistance, Micho was able to receive the x-rays, hospital stay and cardiology consultation which provided the guidance and medications needed. The Moreno’s once again have a complete household with their newest member, Micho, back home with this loving family. Welcome home Micho!
