GENERAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Veterinary Practice MUST be located in Monterey County.

You and your pet must live in Monterey County, California.

Your pet is a dog or cat
-
​You may be required to make a meaningful financial contribution to your pet’s care. This may come from you, friends, other or other animal welfare organizations.

You must be able to prove low income and financial need
-
You cannot delay the appropriate/necessary care of your pet while waiting for processing of your application.
INELIGIBLE SITUATIONS

Veterinary Practice is not located in Monterey County.
-
You and your pet do not live in Monterey County, California.
-
Dental Issues arising from neglect (e.g., loose teeth, tarter and gum disease).
-
Dental problems due to Trauma, or Illness may be eligible
-
-
Preventive and Routine care (e.g., vaccination, spay or neuter, parasite preventives)
-
Injury or illness is a result of neglect or abuse
-
Reproductive and Breeding evaluations and care, or complications from breeding
-
Cosmetic procedures or complications from cosmetic procedures
-
Evaluation and treatment has already been completed
-
Care provided by anyone that is not a licensed veterinarian

SPECIFIC PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
GET EM TO THE VET

Funds to support initial exam and care by a veterinarian you’re your pet has not been seen (or has had initial exam but you are unable to afford the recommended treatment plan from the veterinarian) .

Generally limited to a single appointment/veterinary visit but limited rechecks may be authorized if we are notified in advance
-
You may need to contribute a small amount to care costs if financially able to do so.
SHORT TERM / CRITICAL

Evaluation and care of unexpected, urgent or emergent illness or injury

Initial evaluation and care of a chronic condition
-
You will need to make a meaningful financial contribution toward your pet’s care costs
-
Care may occur in single visit, over a few days or over a period of several months when authorized
-
The Treating Veterinarian must support the application and provide a medical and cost plan to Max’s Helping Paws
LONG TERM / CONTINUED

Assistance with care of a chronic medical disease or cancer for up to 2 years
-
You will be required to contribute significantly (generally 50%) toward your pet's care costs
-
You must be able to document continued eligibility and financial need during the 2 years of assistance
-
The Treating Veterinarian must support the application and provide a medical and cost plan
